The perfect instrument

Finding just the right instrument can be a daunting task, especially if you are new to playing the guitar.  So let us give you a few tips on what kind of instrument to purchase.

When It comes to price a good starting steel strung  acoustic guitar can cost around as little as £100. Things to look out for are the height of the strings which is called the action. Ideally a low action makes for easier playing and its kinder to you finger tips. Of course 2nd hand bargains can be had but you won’t get a guarantee if anything goes wrong, unless its purchased from a shop. Companies like Fender offer some great budget acoustics and so do Epiphone.

Electric guitars are generally easier to play and are kinder to your fingers. They come in all shapes and sizes and again can be purchased for around the £100 mark. There is also a massive used market for electric guitars so bargains can be had. As with acoustic guitars you will need to pay attention to the action as the same rules apply. Look out for Squire Stratocasters,Squire Telecasters,Epiphone and Yamaha Pacifica guitars.

Electric bass guitars cost a little more and can be bought for around £150 new the same rule applies to action and brands to look out for are Squire, Ibanez and Epiphone.

You will need to buy a guitar amplifier for your electric/bass guitar but not to worry there are lots of decent low priced practice amps for most pockets. Blackstar make a super portable Blackstar fly 3 mini bass amp for around £70 and they also do an excellent fly 3 guitar amp with bluetooth functionality for around £75 at this time of writing.

Repairs

Every so often we need to get a piece of equipment repaired and guitars are no different. The main thing that needs to be done is a setup and this is a little like a service. The guitar repairer or luthier will look at the guitar neck and check the action and adjust it if needed. They will look at the frets and make sure there are no sharp edges and that they are seated properly and there are no buzzes or dead notes when the instrument is fretted. Also guitars may need to have their electrics attended to or even have a customisation done as an upgrade. Guitar repairers also repair body work as sometimes guitars get as we say dinged or damaged.

Sometimes our amplifiers need some tlc especially tube amps, which use quite old technology but sound lovely and warm and are more expensive than their transistor based cousins. The main issue tube amps suffer from are when their tubes or valves decide to misbehave. Transistor amps don’t suffer this problem and are generally more reliable but don’t on the whole sound as nice as a tube amp. Coolriffs can source repairers for your guitars and amplifiers taking the pressure off you trying to get your equipment repaired.
